Our industrialized society calls for the need of exhaust pipes, carbon gases and industrial fumes, which are all part of what causes pollution. But pollution is much more than industrial fumes, they are also more subtle things we are exposed to everyday at home. Because babies and children are much more sensitive to this pollution, and because we don’t know what long term exposure can cause to our bodies, try to keep this minimal in your baby’s room.

Organic and eco bedding and mattress

Bedding wise, opt for organic material and an organic crib mattress. Organic beddings (blankets, organic crib mattress, pillows, pillow cases, crib pads) are made of natural materials, that are untreated, unbleached and does not contain chemicals dyes.

Sheep wool is a very popular material in the making of baby blankets for several reasons. First, they are hypoallergenic, have natural antibacterial properties and are treated with natural methods.

As soon as your child is old enough to sleep in a regular bed, opt for a pillow and a comforter filled with cereals (millet, buckwheat, wheat) ou goose feathers if there are no allergies running in your family.

Carbon gases, exhaust pipes, industrial fumes are the well known causes of pollution. But pollution is much more than the bad air we breath on a bad smog day, pollution is also found at home. As a matter of fact, we are exposed everyday to numerous toxics and chemicals. Babies are extremely sensitive to their environment. This is why many parents are now more conscious about what type of product they buy for their infant. Here are some advices to decrease the level of pollution in your baby’s room.

Hard wood furniture

Be careful when you buy furniture for you baby. Avoid those “furniture kits” with panels made of plywood or melamine. Plywood and melamine contain formaldehyde, a product possibly associated with cancer (National Cancer Institute).

Ideally, buy untreated hard wood furniture , then treat it yourself with an organic or homemade polish.

More and more companies offer bio bamboo products. Bamboo products are great for the environment because they will last for a long time and bamboo grows fast (fastest known growing plant on Earth!)
