5 reasons to buy organic products

Friday, 14. May 2010 15:43

The use of chemicals, genetically modified organisms, pesticides, etc. in agriculture has improved productivity significantly; increasing food levels in the food banks of the world as well as other products requiring material such as cotton in an organic crib mattress. However, these production techniques have a negative impact on human health as well as the health of the soil and the environment. Organic agriculture helps reduce those impacts or eliminate them altogether. But what is exactly organic agriculture, and how does it help improve our health and protect the environment?

Organic agriculture is a production management system that promotes strict respect for the links and natural balances between the soil, plants and animals. Unlike traditional agriculture, which relies heavily on chemicals and genetic engineering, organic farming relies on agronomic, biological, and mechanical methods such as green fertilizers, biological pest control, and special cultivation techniques to maintain soil productivity.

Five reasons to buy organic food and products

Health
Pesticides and herbicides used to eliminate pests and weeds can also harm humans and have been linked to cancer, birth defects, nerve damage and genetic manipulations. Farmers and children are especially at risk, particularly in developing countries where pesticide use is often poorly regulated. Using green pesticides instead of chemical ones can help prevent many diseases and thus improve our lives.

Productivity
By neglecting the soil structure and relying on monoculture, conventional agriculture thrashes the land and diminishes its productivity over time due to erosion and the lack of natural nutrients. Plants that grow on improperly balanced soil are more susceptible to pests and require an increased use of pesticides. But natural selection has made insects genetically resistant to pesticides and crop losses are increasing. By relying on techniques such as crop rotation and the use of biological pest control methods and natural green manure, organic farming helps maintain the soil productivity without destroying the environment.

Food quality
Organically grown plants are nourished naturally, which leads to a better structural and metabolic integrity of their cellular structure than their conventional counterparts. This means that unlike conventional food, organic foods can be stored for a long period of time without molding and rotting. The quality of fruit and vegetable can also be measured by its sugar content, which is directly related to the quality of nutrition that the plant has enjoyed. In other words, well-nourished plants give tastier fruit and vegetables.

Water
Not only does conventional agriculture wastes a lot of water; it also pollutes ground water and rivers. Organic farming helps reduce water use, and the prohibition of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides reduces the amount of pollutants released in the environment and protects our primary source of drinking water.

Economy
Conventional products may seem cheaper than organic products, but if you add hidden environmental and social costs, it is actually more than double the price of organic products. And while in the short term, massive use of chemicals results in more yields than organic farming, in the long run, the productivity advantage dwindles due to diminished soil fertility. Modern agriculture is also very wasteful in terms of energy consumption (especially petroleum): more energy is used to produce pesticides and fertilizers than to cultivate and harvest the crops themselves. While some farmers report yield reduction when switching from conventional to more environment-friendly farming, the decrease in yields is offset by a 50% lower expenditure on fertilizer and energy. By reducing input costs, organic agriculture can also help struggling family farms, which have decreased in numbers in the past decade.
